Back Kinfra to set up textile centre in Kannur Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 24 THE Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) is establishing a textile centre near Thaliparambu in Kannur district, which aims at providing the basic infrastructure for the growth of the textiles industry in the area. The Union Government is extending a financial assistance of Rs 20 crore for setting up the centre, which is coming up on an 120-acre plot. The total cost of the project is put at Rs. 30 crore. According to kinfra officials, the centre will feature all the basic infrastructure required for the diverse activities in the textiles sector. These include wet processing centre, weaving centre, an apparel park, space for ancillary industries and storage facilities. In the wet processing centre, there will be provision for processing 15 tonnes of yarn and 7,000 metres of textile varieties a day. Besides, there will be a unit comprising all the machinery and equipment for processing three tonnes of yarn a day for the benefit of small-scale weavers. The officials said that the textiles centre would pave the way for the rapid growth of textiles export from the region and also help in the development of the textiles-related industries. The centre is expected to contribute a significant portion of the Rs. 1,000-crore textiles export targeted to be achieved by 2010 from the region. The centre, which will provide direct employment to around 10,000 people, is slated to be completed in two years' time. The Chief Minister, Mr. Oommen Chandy, will lay the foundation stone for the centre on July 30.
