Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam stood at 118.5 feet with an inflow of 1,448 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs. The Vaigai dam level was 31.33 feet with an inflow of 226 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 2,680 mcft.

The rainfall (in mm) recorded in the Periyar dam is 48, Tekkadi 32, Gudalur 2.5.

Two killed in accident

Two research scholars of Madurai Kamaraj University were killed in a road accident here on Sunday.

According to police sources, T. Balasubramanian (26) of Kanyakumari district and R. Prabhakaran (26) of Sivaganga district, both residents of a hostel, were returning to the MKU campus when a speeding state-owned bus ran them over on the Madurai-Theni National Highway. The duo died on the spot.

The Nagamalai Pudukottai police have registered a case.

Murdered

A retired teacher was murdered at Jothinayakkanur village in the district on Saturday night.

According to police sources, I. George Samuel (63) was sleeping near his house when A. Mokkasamy (55) of the same area clubbed him to death. Previous enmity was suspected to be the cause of the murder. The accused was taken into custody.

The Ezhumalai police have registered a case.

Plea to extend last date

The Consumer Rights Protection Council has appealed to the State Government to extend the last date for the distribution of ration cards to consumers from July 31 to August 31. With only two days remaining, more ration cards were yet to be distributed. Hence, it would be of great help if the State Government extended the last date by a month, the council said.

Training programme

The business information centre and sub-contracting exchange of the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) will organise an entrepreneurship training programme for unemployed youth on July 30. It will give information on the financing and preparation of projects, list of machinery manufacturers, exports etc. The programme will give a brief sketch of the business opportunities available in Madurai, self-employment, loan schemes, machinery, investment, marketing and export procedures. Free medical camp

The State Bank of India (commercial branch), in association with Arthur Asirvatham Hospital, Lions Clubs and the Nagamalai Walkers' Association, conducted a free medical camp and seminar at Nagamalai Pudukkottai recently. As many as 364 persons were screened for diabetes, high or low blood pressure and eye problems. Free medicines were distributed.

Vipassana meditation

The Valliammal Institution at Gandhi Museum will organise a two-day introductory training programme on Buddhist `Vipassana' meditation between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on July 28 and 29. Buddhist saint Rev. Bothipala, an expert in Tibetan `Vipassana' Meditation will provide the training.
