Going by numbers, the annual State Exhibition of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi that began at the Durbar Hall Art Centre on Tuesday is a big show. There are 145 works, including paintings, sculptures and photographs. These works were selected out of a total number of 933 entries from 393 artists. The 145 works include 111 paintings, 18 sculptures and 18 creative photographs. The award-winning works were selected from this group. Among the 10 State Award winning works, there are five paintings, two sculptures, one assemblage work, one drawing and one photograph. The works included in the State Exhibition of Art - 2005 hardly display any collective characteristic as such. And it could not be expected too, since the works are too varied in nature. Shijo Jacob's `Jonathan,' stands out among the works. The oil painting on canvas is part of a series that Mr. Jacob is presently working upon. Mr. Jacob, a post -graduate in Painting from Jamia Milia Islamic Central University, New Delhi and graduate from College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram is at present working as a lecturer in Painting at Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikkara. He has conducted two solo shows in New Delhi. His works were exhibited in a number of group exhibitions in India and abroad. Guruprasad,'s sculpture titled `Woman - Real & Imagination,' which won the award makes use of fibre glass, metal and plastic, to depict the destiny of woman in the Indian condition. Baby Gopal P.P., another award-winner, who holds a BFA degree has also tried to portray the fate of women in a painting titled `Sale,' in mixed media. Mikku Kurian Cherian, lecturer in Painting at College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram won the award for his untitled painting in acrylic. Rajan Ariyallur, whose sculpture titled `Achuthandulayunnu,' (The axis is trembling), using stone and bronze depicts a figure pumping water from the typical tube-well pump. Sujith K.S., an MFA (Sculpture) student at College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, won the award for the charcoal drawing titled `Toy Market.' Basanth Peringode's assemblage work on board titled `Machine Series,' also won an award. Sujith S.N., a final year student at College of Fine Arts, Thrissur won the award for his untitled painting with acrylic on canvas. Suresh K. Nair, who studied at the Institute of Mural Painting at Guruvayoor, won the award for the untitled work in mixed media that makes use of the intricate patterns of the mural. In photography, Krishnakumar Muppathadam, a freelance photographer hailing from Ernakulam district, won the award for the work titled `Tsunamiyude Bakkipathram,' (The last remnants of the Tsunami), depicting a crow feeding on a carcass
