Committee submits report on double degree scheme

Revised syllabus for some courses from this academic year

BELGAUM: A committee constituted by Visvesvaraya Technology University, headed by M.G. Venkatesha Murthy, Dean, has submitted its report on implementing "double degree" programmes.

The committee was set up to explore the possibilities of initiating double and multiple degree programmes at the graduate level as part of the ongoing process of bringing in flexibility in the university system following a direction by University Grants Commission in that regard.

The programme will enable B.E. graduates in Instrumentation Technology, Medical Electronics, Electrical & Electronics and Bio-medical Engineering to obtain B.E. degree in Electronics and Communication in one year; Telecommunication graduates to get ECE in one Semester; Environmental and Transportation Engineering graduates can obtain Civil Engineering degree in one year, and Automobile, Industrial Production, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Science graduates to obtain mechanical engineering degree in one year.

Revised syllabus

The VTU decided to implement the revised syllabus for B. Tech. in Textile (Fashion Technology) and B.Arch. courses from the academic year 2005-06.

The revised syllabus as recommended by the Board of Studies for MBA and various M.Tech. courses will also be implemented from the academic year 2005-06.

The syllabi for all the 50 M.Tech. courses in different branches such as Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Polymer Science, Electronics, Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering has been revised.

This apart, the university has introduced two new streams viz. International Business and Banking and Finance.

Regional centre

The university approved awarding of a Rs.14-crore contract for construction of buildings for its Regional Centre in Gulbarga.

An administrative building, classroom complex, hostel, library and all other necessary amenities will be constructed within 12 months.

The meeting also accepted the recommendation of the Financial Committee to sanction about Rs. 2 lakhs to eight faculties to present technical papers in international conferences.
