KC canal reopening announced

KURNOOL: KC canal will be formally reopened on August 1. The SE, Jalandar, said the canal would supply water for 135 days till December 15. Farmers were advised to adopt the cropping pattern suitable for the dates. KC canal was reopened ten days ago unofficially utilising the flow in the river. - Staff Reporter

Meritorious students felicitated KURNOOL: The BC Officials and Professionals Association felicitated students who excelled in the SSC, Intermediate and EAMCET here on Sunday. The Joint Collector Ramsankar Naik, Senior Civil Judge Prasada Raju, the president of the association T. Pullanna and others attended.

A total of 40 students were honoured on the occasion with silver medals.

MRO suspended

NELLORE: The district Collector M. Ravichandra has placed under suspension the Mandal Revenue Officer of Chillakur N. Lokamurthy, the Revenue Inspector D. Subramanyam and village secretary K. Prasad, with immediate effect, for allegedly proposing to sanction lands meant for SC/ST communities to ineligible persons. - Staff Reporter

SVU focus on skill upgradation

TIRUPATI: The Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) will be holding a Community Development Programme on `Technical skill upgradation for possible self-employment' for the rural youth, under the TEQIP scheme of World Bank. Identified youths in the 18 to 40 age group (both males and females) will be provided training in house wiring, motor rewinding and plumbing for a period of 30 days. The minimum qualification is SSC pass or fail. while preference would be given to candidates having basic Applications can be sent to the principal or the CeRDAT coordinator by August 20. - Staff Reporter

Training in automobile servicing

TIRUPATI: The District Youth Services Department and Bajaj Automobiles have come forward to provide free training to youths in servicing the company's two-wheelers. The candidates in the 18 to 35 age group should possess an ITI in motor mechanism or a diploma in automobile/mechanical engineering. Candidates will have to appear with original certificates on August 8 at the Bajaj showroom on Renigunta road here. Further details can be had from SETVEN office at 0877-2286921.

Three drowned in pond

ADILABAD: Three persons, including two children, belonging to Papannapet of Bejjur mandal were drowned in a roadside pond on Sunday.

According to reports, Made Pochaiah (12) and Made Nand Ram (10) went to the pond for swimming. Bondu Baba (60), who was passing by, tried to save them. However, his efforts failed and he was also drowned. - Staff Reporter

Medical employees to intensify stir

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Employees' Union, which conducted a fortnight-long campaign for publication of the PRC report and settlement of other demands, has decided to intensify its agitation.

K. Krishnamacharyulu, general secretary, said in a press release on Sunday that the State Council of the union would meet on August 5 to chalk out the future course. As part of the campaign, demonstrations were held by members of the union at all medical institutions urging the Health Minister to settle their demands which included filling of vacant posts. - Staff Reporter

Donation for college auditorium

TIRUPATI: A. Eswara Reddy, former Assembly Speaker, has announced a donation of Rs.1 lakh for construction of an auditorium for Sri Srinivasa Junior College, Renigunta, in connection with its silver jubilee. He was participating in the closing ceremony of the college's silver jubilee on Saturday. Sri Venkateswara University Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy attended the programme as the chief guest.

The other participants were Sri Padmavathi Mahila University Vice-Chancellor Veena Noble Das and SVU Registrar J. Prathap Reddy. - Special Correspondent

Municipal workers to hold demonstrations

HYDERABAD: The State Municipal and Panchayat Workers' Federation has demanded immediate implementation of the agreement reached with the Government on its pending demands.

N. Subba Rao, general secretary of the federation, said in a statement that demonstrations would be staged at all municipal offices on August 16.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the federation on Saturday.

The meeting also resolved to support the agitation of NGOs for implementation of the PRC report. - Staff Reporter

Man hacked to death

Kakinada: One person was hacked to death and another injured when rival group attacked them with weapons in the temple town of Draksharamam on Saturday night.

According to the police, the dead was identified as Peddireddi Sattibabu alias Chinna (34).

Thalapu Prasad, who was injured, is recovering at the Government General Hospital here.

Old rivalry is said to be the motive behind the attack. - Correspondent

Garuda service for Hyderabad

CUDDAPAH: The APSRTC will ply Garuda air-conditioned service from Cuddapah to Kukatpally Housing Board via Yerraguntla, Proddatur, Duvvur, Allagadda and Kurnool from August 3, according to RTC Regional Manager M. Ravinder.

The bus would leave Cuddapah at 10.30 p.m. and reach KPHB at 5.45 a.m., he said in a statement on Sunday.

In the return journey, the Garuda service would leave Hyderabad at 11.30 a.m. and reach Cuddapah at 8.15 p.m. - Staff Reporter

DGP condemns naxal violence

HYDERABAD: Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen has expressed concern over the continuing violence by the Maoists in the State.

The DGP has condemned the blast of a forest checkpost and torching of an RTC bus in Prakasam district on Saturday, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

ZP committee meeting ADILABAD: The Adilabad Zilla Parishad standing committee on works and finance on Sunday laid stress on works related to repairs of roads and other facilities, which were affected due to the heavy rainfall during the month. Officials of the APTransco, R&B, Panchayat Raj, Rural Water Supply and others were told to expedite repair works. The Nirmal MLA A. Indrakaran Reddy, Mamda ZP Territorial Constituency member Srihari Rao, Bejjur ZPTC member Palvai Sudhakar Rao and others urged for funds through the District Water Management Agency for these repairs. The RWS officials informed the standing committee that drinking water augmentation works to the tune of Rs. 8 crores were taken up. - Staff Reporter

Welfare awards to poor students

KARIMNAGAR: The Loyala educational institutions have distributed welfare awards to 31 poor students during this academic year at the Loyala High School in Karimnagar town on Sunday. The Loyala Poor Students Welfare Fund was set up by the institutions in the year 2000. Since then they had distributed awards to 139 students, excluding this year awards for 31 students.
