Image makeover for Karnataka Tourism

BANGALORE: If the Kerala Tourism Department's slogan of "God's own country" has become the byword for every description about Kerala, Karnataka Tourism intends to chart its own territory with a new brand identity. And they call it: "One State, Many Worlds."

Commissioner of Tourism Mahendra Singh has reason for this new change: "Earlier, the State tourism was identified by theatre of inspiration. But now the change has been brought in to recognise Karnataka more as a tourist destination." Apparently, a growing industry demands a big image makeover. As Mr. Singh says, the State Government got a turnover of Rs. 25 crores from the department this year, compared to Rs. 16 crores last year. This has contributed immensely to the economic growth of the State.

A new brand name, a new image, everything plays a pivotal role in attracting students to the State from different parts of the world. This was Tourism Minister D.T. Jayaram's take on the issue as he unveiled the new slogan: "The Government spends Rs. 200 crores every year for tourism development in the state."

The tourism scene should see big growth next year when the Mahamasthabhisheka starts at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district. With sites such as the Belur-Halebid temples in the vicinity, tourists are bound to flock to the place sometime from February.

"Nearly 20 lakh tourists and pilgrims are expected to attend the Mahamasthabhisheka. A high-level committee has been formed to coordinate the activities of Mahamasthakabhisheka," said Mr. Jayaram. Besides, about 25,000 people visit the Jog Falls every year. To attract more tourists to this place, about 250 cusecs of water will be allowed to flow from Lakkwalli dam every weekend from the second week of August, says the Minister.
