Fishermen prepare to take to the sea from Fort Kochi. According to a recent study conducted by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, 3,000 fishing communities are scattered over the Indian coastline. Of the 6 lakh persons dependant on the sea for livelihood in 823 fishing communities of Kerala, 1.5 lakh are fishermen. The study, conducted at a cost of Rs 80.5 lakh and the first since 1980, also revealed that Thiruvananthapuram has the largest number of fishermen in the State.
