Expert panel to decide on increasing water storage level after detailed study

ANANTAPUR: The expert committee on the safety of Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR) in the district was learnt to have sought a detailed block-wise report on the impact of grouting work done on the leakages in the non-overflow bund.

The engineers of the HLC circle in the district sent a cumulative report on the impact of grouting work done last week. But, the expert committee was learnt to have sought further details to take a decision on increasing the water storage level.

The Superintending Engineer of HLC, P. Somi Reddy, informed that the grouting works done on the 6 to 12 non-overflow bund blocks during the last two years had resulted in containing the leakage to a large extent. The leakage from these blocks decreased to 0.81 cusecs from 30.8 cusecs earlier.

There was another leakage on the spillway under the third crest gate but it posed no threat to the dam's safety. The leakage was taken up for grouting and some 0.45 cusecs of water is leaking, he explained.

With an inflow of 1,350 cusecs from HLC, the water storage in PABR on Wednesday was 1.436 tmcft. After generation of power 749 cusecs was being let out for Mid Pennar Reservoir. The water storage in Tungabhadra reservoir at Hospet was 111.31 tmc ft on Wednesday morning against its full capacity of 111.5 tmc ft. The inflows were recorded at 62,625 cusecs and outflows at 62,009 cusecs.
