Teachers' union seeks revised schedule

HYDERABAD: State Teachers' Union, Andhra Pradesh (STUAP), has urged the Government to issue a revised schedule for transfers, promotions and recruitment of teachers.

In a statement here on Thursday, the STUAP president P.Subba Reddy and general secretary A. Anantharumulu, said that they had represented to the State Election Commissioner A.V.S. Reddy that municipal elections were not an impediment and that the schedule which was issued before the notification should be implemented.

VSP achieves record

sales turnover

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has created a record by achieving a sales turnover of Rs. 985 crores -- the highest ever for any August month since its inception.

According to a press release by VSP the plant registered a growth of 63 per cent over Rs. 601 crore-turnover during the corresponding period of last year. With this, the cumulative sales turnover between April-August 2005 zoomed to Rs. 2,946 crores, a growth of 8.75 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: There was rain at a few places in Coastal Andhra on Thursday and it was isolated in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Kavali recorded a rainfall of 4 cm; Nagarjunasagar, Rajahmundry 3 cm each; and Atchampet and Dummagudem 2 cm each.

The weather forecast for Friday is that light to moderate rain is likely at a few places in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Rain would be isolated in Telangana. - Special Correspondent

Janata Dal (S) to contest 14 seats

KADAPA: Janata Dal (Secular) will contest 14 corporator seats in Kadapa Municipal Corporation its district President, K. Subbarayudu Achari, said on Thursday. The party would also contest from two wards each in Rajampet and Pulivendula municipalities and one each in Proddatur, Rayachoti and Jammalamadugu, he told the district committee meeting here. Party candidates would file nominations on September 4 and 5 and undertake canvassing from September 7, he said.- Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The Project Director of Indira Kranti Pathakam (IKP) Wilson Babu asked the ICDS and anganwadi workers to educate the poor to prepare nutritious diet. Addressing a meeting after inaugurating a workshop here on Thursday, he said 55 per cent of children were suffering from malnutrition in society. The Head of community medicine, Niranjan Paul, said majority of women in rural areas were suffering from malnutrition. Nellore: Around seven persons were arrested by district police on Thursday in connection with various offences.

While at Kuditipalli village of Manubolu mandal, two persons were rounded up in connection with a clash, at Jagadevipet area of Indukurpet mandal, one person was taken into custody for allegedly harassing a woman.

Probe ordered into alleged rape of tribal

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the alleged gang rape of a Gond tribal from Dandepalli mandal. He assured a group of tribal organisations of arresting the seven persons allegedly involved in the incident if they were found to be guilty prima facie. The girl, who was also presented before the SP, belongs to Mukhasiguda. Tribal organisations demanded Rs. 5 lakhs compensation, a Government job and 5 acres of land to the victim. The tribal leaders also met the district Collector R. Subba Rao.

Chronic TB patient jumps to death

Kakinada: Chronic TB patient Thota Apparao (31) allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a dried up well in Kummarilova village of Tuni rural mandal in the wee hours of Thursday. He received multiple fractures and died instantaneously. The Tuni rural police retrieved the body and sent for a post-mortem. A case is registered. - Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested K. Rambabu, Work Inspector working in the Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation, Sithanagaram, Vizianagaram, on the charge of accepting Rs.1,000 bribe from a person to do an official favour. He allegedly demanded the bribe to identify a beneficiary in the bank to get an amount of Rs.10,000 released for construction of a house under the rural permanent housing scheme. Filing of nominations

ELURU: Filing of nominations began on Thursday on a sluggish note in West Godavari district with 23 nominations filed in various municipalities and Eluru Municipal Corporation (EMC). Eight nominations were filed in the EMC while nine in Bhimavaram, two in Narsapur, three in Tanuku and one in Palacole. Of the seven municipalities and one municipal corporation in the district, as many as three municipalities — Tadepalligudem, Kovvuru and Nidadavole — did not receive even a single nomination on the first day. ELURU: The Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi (KVVPS) district committee on Thursday appealed to the police higher ups to suspend the anti-naxal squad SI, M. Anjaneya Swamy, for allegedly abusing and torturing a Dalit woman at Makkenavari Gudem in T. Narasapur mandal recently. KHAMMAM: The Telugu Desam Party district leadership incurred the ire of the party workers for its omissions and commissions in its first list of nine candidates announced for the Khammam municipality on Thursday. The party district unit office witnessed unruly scenes. Some of the workers lodged their protest over what they called the wrong selection of candidates by hurling chairs as well as abuses in the meeting hall.
