Rewards for personnel involved in anti-Veerappan operation: Sial

Staff Correspondent

Government has issued an order to this effect

MANGALORE: The State Government has sanctioned rewards for police personnel involved in anti-Veerappan operations. The Government issued an order in this regard on Friday and instructions have been given to the accounts section of the Police Department to process them, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Bhupendra Singh Sial said here on Sunday.

Speaking to presspersons during his first official visit to the District Police Office after taking over as the police chief, Mr. Sial said policemen irrespective of their ranks, who were on rolls in the operation as on October 18, 2004 (the day Veerappan was killed), will receive an increment.

"Policemen will get dearness allowance associated with the increment and this will become part of their pay," he explained. The cash award will be based on their stint with the Special Task Force constituted to capture the brigand, he said.

Stating that the Home Department has forwarded the file to the Finance Department, Mr. Sial said he and Chief Secretary B.K. Das have spoken to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh about sanctioning house sites to these police personnel.

"I will ensure that the policemen get plots in their native places at the earliest," Mr. Sial added.

Asked if there was any move to set up new police commissionerates in the State, he said the modalities in that connection will figure at a meeting on police reforms to be held in New Delhi on Friday.

The Centre has also convened meeting of chief secretaries and police chiefs of States affected by naxalites, in Delhi on September 19, he said.
