THE Joint Admissions Board of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) met here on Saturday to discuss the revised procedure for admission to technical institutes through JEE, and finalise the policy decisions on JEE 2006.

The meeting was attended by directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), directors of the Institute of Technology, Benaras Hindu University, and Indian Institute of Mines, Dhanbad, Chairmen and Vice-Chairman of the Joint Implementation Committee of JEE, and the Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development.

Speaking to newspersons after the meeting on the new format for JEE 2006, the Director of IIT, Kharagpur, Prof S.K. Dube, said JEE would continue to be the sole criterion for ranking students for admission to IITs, IT-BHU and ISM, Dhanbad, and other participating institutes. School results would be factored into the admission process for the IITs. Only those students who secure a first class or equivalent in the Plus 2 examinations would be eligible for admission to the IITs.

Prof Dube said there would be a relaxation of five per cent of the marks below the minimum level prescribed in the respective examination for students belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

Besides, JEE would be a single, objective-type examination. The question paper could well include short write-ups on any topic in physics, chemistry or mathematics, followed by objective questions that would be based on the particular write-up. A student can write the JEE in the year in which he or she passes the Plus 2 examination and/or the following year. Students who join any of the IITs, IT-BHU or ISM, Dhanbad, through JEE will not be allowed to appear in JEE in the future.
