Flood warning at Bhadrachalam

KHAMMAM: The first warning was issued at Bhadrachalam as the flood level in the Godavari crossed 43 feet at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

The Sub-Collector, Yogitarana, reviewed the situation in the sub-division. The flood level rose to 43.6 feet by 5 p.m. The sectoral officers in-charge of the revenue mandals all along the river course in the district were put on alert. They were asked to make themselves available at their respective headquarters. - Staff Reporter

Maoists blast mandal office

VIZIANAGARAM : A six member team of the CPI(Maoists), including two women, blasted the office of the Kurupam mandal revenue officer with detonators on Saturday night.

According to the Kurupam sub-Inspector, S. Tirumala Rao, the Maoists asked two teashop owners resting in their kiosks nearby to leave the place.

Later, they blasted the building. The naxalites were protesting against the killing of Maoist sympathisers by `cobras.'- Correspondent

CPI refutes BJP charge

HYDERABAD: S. Sudhakar Reddy, CPI Central Secretariat member, has criticised the BJP for uttering `falsehood' that the Communists had joined hands with `razakars' during the Hyderabad liberation struggle.

Sharply reacting to the BJP allegation, the Nalgonda MP said in a statement on Sunday that it was the Communists who emboldened people to offer stiff armed resistance to the regime. - Special Correspondent

Students excel in maths contest

Kakinada: Fourteen students of Pragati Educational Institutions, including two of the junior college and twelve of talent school and little public school, exhibited extraordinary skills at the 37th national mathematical competitions organised by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India, Chennai, on September 3.

The director of the Pragati Group, S. Poornachandra Rao, said on Sunday that the competitions were conducted for the students of fifth to tenth class and the institution students in each class qualified for the final test scheduled for October 22. - Correspondent

TDP candidate joins Congress

KADAPA: The TDP's official candidate in the first division of Kadapa, E. Sugunamma, and two independents -- M. Chinnakka and N. Manjula -- joined the Congress on Sunday and announced withdrawal from the contest.

A former district Youth Congress president, A.G. Suryaprakash Reddy, who joined the TDP before Assembly elections, returned to the Congress on Sunday. - Staff Reporter

Two drowned during Ganesh immersion

Kakinada : Two persons were drowned during the Ganesh idol immersion at two different places under the Anaparti police station limits on Saturday night, according to the police.

While Godugula Audinarayana (29) was drowned in Yerra Kalva on the outskirts of Anaparti, Eli Sreenu (17) was drowned in another canal near Ayyappa temple. - Correspondent

Air Deccan reduces fare

VISAKHAPATNAM : Air Deccan has reduced its fare from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad from Rs.3,580 to Rs.2,622. However, the fare from Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam remains at Rs.3,580, according to the branch commercial manager, K. Srinivas Reddy. Air Deccan has also announced operation of its Visakhapatnam-Chennai service from September 26. - Staff Reporter

Autobiography released

TIRUPATI: SVU Vice-Chancellor S.Jayarama Reddy released the autobiography of the former Speaker Agarala Eswara Reddi at a function here on Sunday. The book was released in commemoration of the first death anniversary of his wife, Agarala V. Ramanamma. A memorial lecture was delivered by S.P.Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras on `Healthy practices in higher education. New reservation

facility in Anantapur

ANANTAPUR: The Railways have introduced Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) at Anantapur and Tirupati recently. The system will facilitate passengers to reserve general tickets three days in advance for any train in the country and from any station to any destination. According to the station manager of Anantapur, C. Aswartha Naik, the new system was installed at the railway station here and at Tirupati on September 14. Staff Reporter

Nellore: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Nellore, has decided to provide additional services to subscribers as part of extension of various facilities. Accordingly, the customers of landline and Tarang (WLL mobile and fixed WLL) can dial the number 12555 and listen to songs, cricket score, news, jokes, contests over games and movies in Telugu, English and Hindi. Two units per minute (Rs. 2.40) would be charged for this service. It will be available for mobile customers also. Staff Reporter
