Fisheremen preserving sardines at a unit on Kappad beach, Kozhikode in Kerala. Dwindling catches from deep sea have led to excess fishing near the shores, threatening fish stock in the Arabian Sea.

Sixty-five per cent of sardines in the country are caught in the Western Coast. Dried sardines are in great demand in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for use as chicken feed. But a rise in the catch has led to fall in the prices.
