Opinion - Letters to the Editor

End the controversy

The controversy triggered by Indian cricket team coach Greg Chappell's email to the BCCI president against captain Sourav Ganguly should end as soon as possible. Some hard decisions need to be taken by the BCCI immediately.

Indian cricket is bigger than Ganguly or Chappell. Both are equally responsible for the present crisis. The BCCI has done the right thing in requesting the players under contract not to talk to the media on the subject until a solution is found.

Chappell is a thorough professional and I believe the contents of his email.

It is time Ganguly stepped down and played as team member if he can prove his mettle.

It is clear from the email that Ganguly is desperate to retain his captaincy.

It is the right time for him to step down. Let us hope that India wins the 2007 World Cup with a team that is physically and mentally fit.

Harbhajan Singh's rush to the press in support of Ganguly vindicates Chappell's comments on the "palace intrigues" orchestrated by the captain. Let us not keep harping on Ganguly's past exploits.

The real question is whether Chappell is the right person for the job. We need a strong captain like Ganguly who will stand up to the media and other critics, keeping the team's interests in mind.

Chappell's remarks are in bad taste. Ganguly's contributions to building a vibrant cricket team cannot be ignored despite his present lean patch. The BCCI should review its policy of having foreign coaches.

A coach has to smoothen the rough edges and allow a reasonable time period for the team to fit into his vision.

In this context, Chappell's complaint appears premature.

Removing Ganguly on the basis of his performances is fine but to sack him on the basis of the coach's complaints could set a bad precedent.
