Worker crushed to death

KADAPA: A roller operator engaged in Telugu Ganga Canal works Banka Venkata Pratap Reddy, 28, was crushed to death by a roller at the project site in Brahmamgari Matham mandal late on Wednesday night.

Pratap Reddy, belonging to Turakapalle in Kamalapuram mandal, was asleep on the banks near the canal gate and was crushed to death by a roller that was levelling a road, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

One killed in roof collapse

Nellore: A woman was killed and two others injured when the roof of an abandoned mica mine suddenly collapsed at Manubolu on Wednesday. One of the injured was shifted to Tirupati for treatment. - Staff Reporter

Two commit suicide

Kakinada: A girl Thota Chandrakala, 19, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her house in Bandanapudi village on Wednesday. She was rushed to Government General Hospital here where she died while undergoing treatment on Thursday. The Gollapalem police have registered the case.

Naram Nagaraju, 22, committed suicide by consuming acid near Upputeru bund on the city outskirts on Wednesday. He died at Government General Hospital in the early hours of Thursday. - Correspondent

Farmers stage dharna for water

KADAPA: Farmers staged a dharna before Duvvur MRO office on Thursday demanding irrigation facilities from Chintakunta tank in the mandal.

Led by BJP Kisan Morcha leader P. Lakshmi Reddy and TDP district official spokesman Redyam Venkatasubba Reddy, farmers said their crops would wither away if irrigation water was not released to the tank. - Staff Reporter

Electoral rolls for panchayat polls

HYDERABAD: The State Election Commission (SEC) has said that electoral rolls prepared and published with January 1, 2006, as qualifying date will be adopted for panchayat elections to be held in the middle of next year. The term of panchayat bodies will end by July/August 2006.

Debabrata Kantha, Secretary of the commission, in a press release said that the draft rolls would be published on October 20 and the claims/objections could be filed up to November 19.

HYDERABAD: The tourism special edition, `Amazing Andhra', published from Sachivalayam monthly magazine won the Tourism Excellence Award in the category of Best English write-ups for the year 2004-05.

Power regulatory panel's order

HYDERABAD: The State Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday issued orders stipulating that the distribution companies and consumers in the "open access system" under the Electricity Act, 2003, must purchase 5 per cent of power requirements from non-conventional energy sources. This is for the period up to 2008.

The order followed hearings conducted by the commission in which representatives of non-conventional energy units and petitioners from across the State took part. - Special Correspondent

ELURU: Kare Babu Rao, Congress corporator from the 50th division, has been tipped for Mayor of the Eluru Municipal Corporation (SC reserved).

Satellite township for poor in Kadapa

KADAPA: A satellite township with 4,000 houses for the urban poor was being built on the outskirts of Kadapa town at a cost of Rs. 11.20 crores, according to the district Collector G. Asok Kumar. A sum of Rs. 80 lakhs was sanctioned for providing water pipelines to each household and wanted power supply and street lighting provided in the township using cable wiring. .- Staff Reporter

Jatropha plantations to be taken up

KADAPA: Twenty five lakh Jatropha plants were ready for block plantation in the district, DWMA Project Director P. Easwara Reddy said at a meeting on block plantation here. Jatropha plantations would be raised in 20 acres of land near Kopparthi and Chinnakampalle villages in Chintakommadinne mandal, by extending financial assistance, he said. Farmers would be supplied saplings free of cost at his office and also provided free transportation, Mr. Easwara Reddy said. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The District Youth Welfare Department will hold cultural competitions for youth between the age group of 15 and 35 in various events at district level. The winners will be eligible for participation at State level and national level competitions being conducted in phases, the Chief Executive Officer of SETKUR, R. Suryanarayana, has said. SV varsity panel to study fee anomalies

University has constituted a nine-member committee to look into the oft-repeated complaint from the students of the university college about anomalies in the various fee being collected by the authorities concerned. Ex gratia released

KADAPA: Kin of a farmer G. Ramakrishna Reddy, who committed suicide owing to debts in Obulreddinagar in Mydukur mandal have been sanctioned ex gratia of Rs. 1.50 lakhs, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Thursday. It included Rs. 50,000 for one-time settlement of debts and Rs. 1 lakh as ex gratia, he said in a statement.

Free surgery for poor patients

TIRUPATI: The SVIMS hospital has screened 112 critically-ill patients living below the poverty line for free surgery under `Pranadanam' scheme.

The decision was taken at a meeting here on Thursday with the director, G. Subramanyam, in the chair. Of the total number of cases, 89 pertain to CT surgery, 16 to cardiology, four to neurosurgery and one each to oncology, orthopaedics and gastroenterology.- Staff Reporter

Award for Aditya Public School

Kakinada: The District Educational Officer M.R. Prasanna Kumar on Wednesday presented the award of appreciation for the Aditya Public School for achieving cent per cent passes that too all first classes in the Tenth Class public examinations held in March and emerged as the top ten in the district level. Rs. 3.01 cr. released for Bhimasingi Sugars

VIZIANAGARAM: The State Government has released Rs. 3.01 crores for overhauling of plant and machinery and settlement of salary arrears of Bhimasingi Sugars, according to a press release. The farmers have been asked to cooperate with the factory by transporting sugarcane to the factory instead of to jaggery crushing units in the ensuing season, the release added. - Correspondent
