THE Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, has made an appeal to insurance companies to settle all the claims arising out of the recent floods in the State at the earliest.

Mr Deshmukh said the State had suffered losses of about Rs 12,000 crore in the recent floods.

The State Government has taken steps to assist the farmers, small businessmen, artisans and affected families to recover their losses.

"We require the strong support of insurance companies. I have convened three meetings with insurance companies and made an appeal to them to liberalise their norms in such a way that farmers, small traders and affected citizens can avail of financial assistance without much hassle," he said.

He also said that insurance companies should formulate their strategies in such a way that the smallest component of society can avail the benefit from their policies.
