New Chief General Manager for SBH

HYDERABAD: Fifty five-year-old R.P. Sinha took over as Chief General Manager of State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) on Saturday. He was earlier General Manager (Technology) in the same bank. In his 33-year-long stint in banks, he worked in State Bank of Patiala, where he started his career, State Bank of Indore and State Bank of Saurashtra. His areas of specialisation are corporate finance, credit management, general administration and control, a bank press release said. - Special Correspondent

Intermediate exam fee date

HYDERABAD: The Board of Intermediate Education has clarified that the last date for payment of fee without fine for Intermediate II examination-March 2006 is October 20 and not October 10 as published in these columns on Saturday. - Special Correspondent

ACB raid on commercial tax office

Nellore: Sleuths belonging to Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Nellore, led by DSP V.S.R. Chowdary conducted surprise raid on the office of Deputy Commercial Tax Officer-II, Nellore town, and found an amount of Rs. 1.68 lakhs, which was said to be unaccounted for.

Employees, however, said that the amount was collected as penal fees and during raids on jackpot lorries on September 29. The matter is under investigation. - Staff Reporter

Family of four attempts suicide; two die

KURNOOL: A family of four attempted suicide by jumping into the KC Canal in the early hours of Saturday. While two of them died, two others were rescued by people.

According to reports, the family of a businessman M.V. Laxminarayana, 36, took the drastic step as they were reportedly burdened with financial problems. The family owned an electronic shop and debts mounted to Rs. 20 lakhs, it was said. With lenders pressuring him to repay, he, along with his wife Laxmi Devi, son Arunkumar, 8, and daughter Sushmanjali, 12, decided to commit suicide. The woman and her daughter were rescued. - Staff Reporter

Ryots' suicide: panel's directive

VIZIANAGARAM: The inquiry commission on farmers' suicides headed by L. Rama Chinna Reddy has asked the police to register a case against one B. Appala Naidu of Ramannagraharam in Therlam mandal for his attempt to commit suicide. Mr. Reddy conducted an inquiry into seven suicide cases reported in the district, and asked the police to register a case. In the remaining six cases, five were not farm related and the other death was not due to debts, the commission felt, according to an official release. - Correspondent

Job cut in FACOR

VIZIANAGARAM: Ferro Alloys Corporation (FACOR) at Garividi effected lay off to 40 per cent of its workforce from Saturday following "depressed market" and "shortage of raw material." The factory has 745 permanent employees and 200 contract workers.

According to sources, two of the five furnaces had been shutdown as the raw material available with the unit was hardly sufficient for a couple of days. Meanwhile, CITU condemned the lay off and called upon workers to be ready for a stir. - Correspondent

Killed in wall collapse

Kakinada: An agricultural labourer Mallarapu Krishna, 47, was killed when the wall of the neighbouring house collapsed and fell on him while he was asleep in his hut in the Kotapeta area of Samalkot town on Saturday morning. - Correspondent

`Mohini Attam' performance

TIRUPATI: The TTD management has organised a `Mohini Attam' dance programme, a traditional dance form of Kerala, by renowned danseuse Gopika Varma at the Mahati auditorium here on Sunday.

Accompanied by an ensemble of traditional percussion instruments, she will give a performance on the `Pasurams' (verses) of Kulasekhara Alwar, one of the 12 Alwars (Vaishnavite saints) who once ruled parts of Kerala. She will also enact various compositions of Annamayya. - Staff Reporter

Driver run over

KADAPA: Driver of YSR rice mill Gajjela Pothuraju (40) was fatally run over by an unidentified vehicle in Badvel town in the early hours of Saturday. He was proceeding on a bicycle when the accident occurred, according to Badvel Urban sub-inspector Satya Babu. - Staff Reporter

Eight sheep perish

KADAPA: A lorry ploughed into a herd of 150 sheep at Nidjivvi village in Yerraguntla mandal, killing eight of them on Friday night. Fifteen more were severely wounded. The sheep belonged to Nadipi Ganganna of Chinna Varadayapalle in the mandal. - Staff Reporter

Nellore: A road safety programme christened `SAFAR' (Safety Always for All Roads), will be inaugurated at 12 noon on Sunday at the Golden Jubilee Hall, Nellore, which coincides with the inauguration of the programme all over the State. The programme aims at protecting passengers, taking relevant steps to safeguard property, besides maintaining road safety. Training programmes will also be held for drivers. - Staff Reporter

Kakinada: Rich tributes were paid to late G.M.C. Balayogi, former speaker of Lok sabha, on his birth anniversary at a function held at the Telugu Desam office here on Saturday. Rajahmundry: Different voluntary organisations celebrated World Elders' Day on Saturday in and around Rajahmundry. Helpage India, an NGO, conducted free eye and medical camp in Madduru, Kovvuru mandals. Project officer of the NGO V. Kakinada: A hundred students of JNTU College of Engineering donated blood at the blood donation camp organised here on Saturday to mark the celebration of voluntary blood donation day. The Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Medical and Health Infrastructure Development Corporation Gidugu Rudra Raju inaugurated the camp. VIZIANAGARAM: The loss due to cyclonic storm was Rs. 35.69 crores, according to the Collector B. Venkateswar. The loss to individuals was in the form of agriculture crops, cattle, fishing nets and boats, houses and shops. - Correspondent
