BANGALORE: The Government will set up a befitting memorial to former Chief Minister J.H. Patel shortly in recognition of his secular political outlook and rare intellect, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh said.

Speaking at the 75th birth anniversary of J.H. Patel organised by the J.H. Patel Foundation here on Saturday, Mr. Dharam Singh said that Patel stood out among many of his contemporary politicians.

The only other person who could be compared with Patel in terms of humane attitude and outspoken nature was the former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao, he said. Speaking on the occasion, President of the Janata Dal (Secular) H. D. Deve Gowda said he met Patel during the Emergency. Despite ideological differences, he and Patel were friends.

Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash said that Patel was a complex person blessed with enviable intellect, political wit and healthy sense of humour.

The Deputy Chief Minister released Vinoda-Vichara, a compilation of comments made and repartees given by Patel at different political and administrative forums.

Mahima Patel, legislator and son of J.H. Patel, welcomed the gathering.
