Centre to set up Premchand research centre

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has decided to set up a Munshi Premchand Memorial Research and Study Centre at Lamhi -- the native village of the legendary Hindi writer in Uttar Pradesh. The Centre will be set up with the help of Banaras Hindu University. Also, help will be extended to Jamia Millia Islamia to establish a Centre for Study on Munshi Premchand along with an archive.

Decisions to this effect were taken by the Committee for the 125th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Munshi Premchand which met here in the Capital on Thursday evening under the chairmanship of Union Information & Broadcasting Minister S. Jaipal Reddy.

Apart from setting up the Research and Study Centre, the Committee also decided to bring out the complete works of Munshi Premchand in Hindi, Urdu and English in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi. Besides, Doordarshan will produce tele-films on those Premchand stories which have not been put on celluloid as yet.
