Counterfeit currency notes traffickers sentenced

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been sentenced to five years' imprisonment by a city court which found them guilty of trafficking in counterfeit currency notes.

An Additional Sessions Court in Tis Hazari handed down the sentence and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 each on accused Mohammed Rahish and Mohammed Afzal, both residents of Delhi. According to the prosecution, on May 19, 2001, a police team patrolling in the area of Shastri Park got a tip-off that some persons were dealing in fake currency notes near Makkai Masjid area.

The team rushed to the spot and arrested Mohammed Rahish and seized 41 counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination from his possession.

Further, on the basis of information provided by Rahish, the police, four days later, raided a house in Kirana village of Uttar Pradesh and arrested three of his accomplices- Mohammed Afzal, Shamim Ahmed and Izhar Ahmed. Five currency notes of the same denomination and belonging to the same series as that of those earlier seized from Rahish were found on them.

Shamim and Izhar were discharged due to ``lack of evidence''. Both Rahish and Afzal were, however, acquitted of criminal conspiracy
