Back Upgrading system memory

My system now consists of one 256 RAM. I want to upgrade it to 512. Now I have two options 1) adding another 256 RAM in other slot. 2) Removing this 256 RAM and adding one 512 RAM chip.

Please explain which option will make my system work faster.

If you are having an HT (Hyper Threading) supporting board, then you need to install the 512 MB RAM as two separate 256 MB RAMs.

HT technology handles the two modules separately and sends and processes data to them simultaneously, increasing your system's performance.

In other cases (non HT boards), it makes no performance difference installing the RAM as a single module or as separate modules.

Additionally, if you install the RAM as separate modules, you have this benefit: In case one of the modules fails, you can still boot your system with the other module.

But if you have just one module, in the event of it failing, you cannot boot your system till you replace or rectify it.
