EXPORT Inspection Council of India (EIC) certified poultry products from India would now be acceptable to Japan. This is the first time that a developed country has formally recognised EIC India's certification for poultry products, said an official release.

Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour Welfare has completed evaluation of India's standards for export of poultry meat and its products and has approved import of Indian poultry that meets Japanese standard with EIC certification issued by the Export Inspection Agencies (EIAs), the agencies managed by EIC across India.

In the light of the current scourge of the avian flu affecting poultry in most parts of the world, Indian poultry product is seen as a safe option, following the recognition of EIC standards by Japan, it added.

The products certified meet the most stringent requirements for ante-mortem and post-mortem, heavy metal, pesticide residues, antibiotic residues and microbiological standards.

According to Mr K.S. Money, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Japan recently granted access to Indian poultry products. A breakthrough has been made after the poultry sector had been eyeing the Japanese market for quite sometime.
