Awards: science council invites nominations

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) has invited nominations for the Sir C.V. Raman Young Scientist awards, Prof. Satish Dhawan Young Engineers' awards, Dr. Kalpana Chawla Young Women Scientist Award and Dr. Raja Ramanna Award for 2004 and 2005.

The C.V. Raman awards are given to five outstanding scientists in the fields of life science, physical science and mathematics, chemical science, agricultural science and animal husbandry and medical science.

The Satish Dhawan awards have been instituted to recognise outstanding work by four engineers in aerospace science and technology, computer and electronics engineering, engineering science and earth science.

The Kalpana Chawla Award is given to a woman scientist or engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the development of science or technology in the State.

The Raja Ramanna Award is presented to a scientist/engineer who has made significant contributions in the field of history and philosophy of science/science and society/science education, says a press release from the council. The awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a memento and a citation.

Candidates should be less than 50 years of age as on February 28, 2004 and February 28, 2005 for the 2004 and 2005 awards, respectively.

Candidates should have been born in Karnataka or domiciled in the State for at least 20 years. They should have published at least five research papers in national or international journals. Award winners of earlier years will not be considered again for the same awards.

Nominations may be sent in duplicate in an envelope marked "Nominations for... award" along with complete biographic data, research/academic profile, important reprints, letters of two referees, two latest passport-size photographs and self-attested domicile certificates.

Nominations should reach the council on or before December 12.
