Fired from job, they set themselves afire

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Two labourers, who had apparently been fired from their jobs in a soft drinks godown at Najafgarh on Saturday, allegedly set themselves afire when the manager did not respond to their requests to re-employ them.

However, the police said they were daily wage labourers who had been jobless for the past few days.

According to the police, the incident occurred outside the City Traders and Distributors, a depot for a soft drinks company, at Dichaon in Najafgarh around 9 a.m. Ramesh Gupta, a resident of Dharampura in Najafgarh, and Vinod Kumar, a resident of Chhattarpur Extension in South Delhi, allegedly poured kerosene and set themselves afire.

The other labourers who were present outside the depot rushed them to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital. While Ramesh, who had sustained 70 per cent burn injuries, was referred to JPN Hospital, Vinod sustained minor injuries on his legs. Ramesh was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of Jaipur Golden Hospital. His condition was reported to be critical.
