Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in parts of Koyambedu and Mahalingapuram area, due to maintenance work.

Elders join children

in celebrations

The Centre for the Welfare of the Aged celebrated Children's Day with elders and children jointly performing `karakattam,' `kolattam,' `poykkalkudhirai' and a fancy dress competition on Monday. About 300 slum elders and 200 children from Mylapore, Triplicane, MGR Colony and Perambur participated.

School celebration

The Zion Matriculation School celebrated Children's Day by organising competitions including fancy dress, story-telling, singing, poetry recitation, dancing, monoacting and Rangoli. The Principal N.Vijayan released the monthly magazine of the school.

Lions mark charter night

The Lions Club of Keelkattalai celebrated the Club's charter night and the annual governor's visit at Sree Bhavani Kalyana Mahal on Monday.

About 250 Lions, Lion ladies and cubs participated.

Teachers entertain children

The Sevalaya's Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School celebrated Children's Day at its service centre in Kasuva. Teachers sang and danced to entertain the children. A debate on television had them engrossed for over an hour.

IPS officers' wives' gesture for mentally ill

Members of the IPS Officers' Wives Association led by Cynthia Alexander celebrated Diwali with children of Bala Vihar recently. Ms. Alexander distributed rice, dhal, sweets and fruits to the mentally ill.

Robber held

The city police have nabbed a 28-year-old man on charges of snatching cellphones and jewellery from persons travelling in cars

A police team from the Vadapalani police, which was on the man's trail caught Govindan of Ponnuvel Pillai gardens in Aminjikarai on Sunday. Mobile phones, gold jewellery, wristwatches and a motorbike worth Rs. 1,25,000 were seized from him.

Dermatologist dead

C.S. Gangadhar Sharma, noted dermatologist and founder director of the Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, passed away on Monday. He was 82. He was Deputy Director of Medical Services and Family Welfare, Chennai, before joining the Hindu Mission hospital after retirement.
