WITH the kharif 2005 oilseeds output up by over eight per cent to 133.7 lakh tonnes, as estimated by the trade, and considering the record production of cottonseed (84.9 lakh tonnes) and the unchanged output of copra (6.5 lakh tonnes), vegetable oil availability during the oil year beginning November is expected to be higher by about seven per cent.

Vegetable oil production from cultivated oilseeds in the kharif season, other oilseeds and secondary sources (rice bran, solvent extracted oils etc) is estimated at 48.5 lakh tonnes (45.3 lakh tonnes), according to a release from the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade.

The major contribution to the increase comes from groundnut oil whose production is estimated at 7.9 lakh tonnes (6.7 lakh tonnes) followed at a distance by soyabean and cottonseed oils.
