Versatile canvas

Themes ranging from myths, religion, nature to abstraction featured in the art works on display at the inter-state exposition.

Art has no language and recognises no boundary. Thus an inter-state exchange of art is India with its multi-cultural fabric would only serve to bring vibrancy to the art and artists.

Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi hosted a five-day art exhibition by the Uttar Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi recently at Bhubaneswar. The exhibition mounted at the gallery of the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra had 30 art works on display. The artists featured were senior established ones and also promising ones from Uttar Pradesh. The themes treated ranged from myths and religion to nature studies and even abstractions.

Although all the works were not of an even standard there were works that stood out for their conceptualisation, colour schemes and execution. Nature-A (oil) by Umanath Maurya, The Fall (water colour) by Sushma Aggarwal, Glamour (acrylic) by S.Pranam Singh, Shubhanan (oil) by Rohit Binayak, Prem Prabah (oil) by Prem Kumari Mishra, Raag Bhairavi (oil) by Geeta Mishra, Women Struggle (oil) by Ajay Pathak, Bandwallah (oil) by Shyam Sharma, Nature - V (acrylic) by Ritika Sinha and Pradeep Sourav's untitled photography impressed with their thematic treatment and technical expertise.

Human emotions were also played out in many paintings that had a blend of traditional and modern. The modernistic touches added intensity to the evocativeness of the pictures.

After a gap of five years Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi has started such inter-state exchange of art again and for providing a much-needed exposure to the artists and art students the Akademi deserves kudos.
