Back Samsung plans $15-m handset unit in Haryana

SAMSUNG Telecommunications plans to invest $15 million to set up a mobile handset manufacturing plant in Haryana. This is part of Samsung's larger investment plans for the telecom sector.

The Samsung President, Mr Ki Tae Lee, disclosed this to the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is currently visiting Seoul, an official statement said. Other details of the plant, including the capacity, are not known.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the mobile handset leader, Nokia, announcing plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. LG, Motorola and other handset manufacturers also plan to set up facilities in India to tap the booming cellular market, which is growing at more than 3 million new users a month. While Nokia is the market leader, Samsung is among the top three vendors.

Telecom equipment manufacturers like Ericsson and Alcatel are also making a beeline to set up a factory in India.
