Yedla Raja Reddy, president, Nizamabad DCC Bank Ltd, assumed charge as vice-president. Holidays for Lok Ayukta

HYDERABAD: Vacations and holidays for the Andhra Pradesh Lok Ayukta and Upa Lok Ayukta for 2006 have been announced.

According to a press release issued by Registrar M.S.K. Jaiswal, the vacations will be from January 9 to 12 (Sankranti), May 8 to June 9 (summer) and October 3 to 6 (Dasara). There will be 18 general holidays, 12 festivals, which occur on second Saturdays and Sundays and 17 optional holidays. The institution will work on April 22 and August 26. Special Correspondent

Minor fire in temple

TIRUMALA: Mild tension prevailed inside the temple of Lord Venkateswara, following an electrical short circuit at Vendi Vakili in the temple complex. The power supply was restored within fifteen minutes.

Police, naxals exchange fire

VISAKHAPATNAM: A brief exchange of fire took place between the police and Maoists near Rollagedda village of GK Veedhi mandal under Annavaram police station limits on Saturday.

There were no casualties.

Relay fast for quota

KURNOOL: Members of Muslim community undertook a three-day relay fast here on Saturday urging the Government to ensure five per cent quota for the community. Deputy mayor Abdul Razak and Awaz movement leader Iqbal Hussain took part in the protest. — Staff Reporter

Stir against LPG shortage

Nellore: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to stage a protest at the Collectorate on Monday, to highlight the problem of severe shortage of LPG in Nellore district.

Party district secretary Jakka Venkaiah on Saturday alleged open misuse by agencies and delivery people. He claimed at several places the agencies were charging Rs. 900 per cylinder. - Staff Reporter

One lakh donated

Nellore: Padmavathi, wife of district Collector M. Ravichandra has donated Rs. 1 lakh towards services for under-6 mentally challenged children. The amount was handed over to the district Red Cross Society at a function here on Saturday. It was said the donation was from Ms. Padmavathi's personal funds. Two killed in accidents

Nellore: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents. A 10-year old boy was killed and three others were seriously when two autorickshaws collided on the NH, Venkatachalasatram, 20 km from Nellore, on Saturday. In another accident, at Kavali, a 60-year-old woman who was hit by a car succumbed at the Government Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Student dies in accident

KHAMMAM : Keerthi Ramesh, 22, a B. Tech third year student of the Kothagudem Engineering College, died in a road accident in the coal town on Friday night.

The police said that the two-wheeler he was driving was knocked down by a lorry resulting in his death. His pillion rider, Srinivas, a student of the same college, sustained injuries. Ramesh was returning from the college when the accident occurred.

Lecturer honoured

ELURU: D. Chandrasekhara Rao, Head, Department of Economics, Sir C.R. Reddy (PG) College, was honoured by the college management and staff here on Saturday on his nomination to the Executive Council of Andhra University. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rao promised to strive for introducing new courses in the college and enforcing academic discipline on the university campus. Scribes condemn burning

of newspaper copies

ELURU: Media Club of Eluru on Saturday condemned the burning of copies of a leading vernacular daily allegedly by the supporters of the local MLA at Kamavarapukota in Chintalapudi Assembly segment. According to club convener I. Subba Rao, a frenzied mob allegedly claiming association with the local MLA attacked a van carrying the newspaper bundles for distribution and burnt them in protest against the daily for publishing certain news items against their leader.

Workshop held on stress management

Kakinada: Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories A. Suryanarayana has said that pranic healing techniques will help beat stress and strain.

He was inaugurating a workshop on stress management and introduction of pranic healing at the NFCL training centre here on Saturday. David Vijay Kumar, president, Pranic Healing Foundation, Vijayawada, demonstrated some of the techniques. - Correspondent

Bandh observed

Rajahmundry: Protesting against the students' lathi-charge in Tirupati on Friday, various student organisations staged rasta roko and boycotted classes on Saturday.

In Vizianagaram, all Government, private and aided colleges in the district observed a bandh. In Kakinada, activists of the ABVP burnt the effigy of Chairman of APSCHE in protest against the proposed introduction of semester system and caning students.
