Back IT's Bajaj show at CII panel meet

EVEN as Indian IT honchos made a beeline for Maurya Sheraton early this morning to hear the Microsoft Chairman, Mr Bill Gates talk about `Realising India's potential', it was Mr Rahul Bajaj who stole the show with his wit and humour.

"Information technology cannot solve all the problems. It's all very well for Bill to talk about reducing the digital divide but can this improve per capita income? asked the Chairman of Bajaj Auto Ltd.

Mr Bajaj was at his swadeshi best today terming himself as a proud Indian.

"We welcome Bill Gates to India, but I am proud to be an Indian," he said, giving his vote of thanks at the CII panel discussion on `Realising India's potential', which also saw technocrat Mr Sam Pitroda and Mr Gates debate issues ranging from India's IT talent to cyber-security.

"We've talked about what a fine educational structure we have with our IITs and IIMs, but what about the mess our primary and secondary school system is in? Will IT help improve this?" Mr Bajaj asked, evoking laughter from the enthralled audience.

He then went on to answer the question himself, saying, "I am sure it will," while Mr Gates and Mr Pitroda looked on.

"And, then, why are we asking Bill how to improve our systems? Is he going to remove corruption? Is he going to change the way our voters elect their representatives on the basis of caste?"

His parting shot: "But, then, I must tell you, my company uses a lot of his (Microsoft) products - , but they could be cheaper and better."'

Earlier, while addressing the forum, Mr Gates said that traditional literacy was no longer enough and that there was a need to look at broad set of skills. "Investment in education system has a key role to play. Success in IT sector comes from investment in institutions such as IITs," he said.
