Back `Essential Commodities Act to be modified as per retail sector needs' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 7 THE Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, is re-working the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act to bring it in tune with the requirements of the retail sector. The proposed comprehensive modifications in the Standards of Weights and Measures Act and Packaged Commodity Rules would also be re-worked for this purpose, said Ms Alka Sirohi, Additional Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs. Ms Sirohi was speaking at Footfalls - International Conference on Opportunities and Challenges in Retail, organised by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Department of Consumer Affairs here. Mr Pranay Sinha, President and CEO, Select Infrastructure and member, FICCI retail committee, called for according industry status to the retail sector.
