13 injured in two accidents

Nellore: Some thirteen persons were injured in two accidents in the district on Thursday.

At Regadachilaka of Kodavaluru mandal, nine Ayyappa devotees were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling was hit by a lorry from behind. The devotees belonged to Suryapet of Nalgonda district and have been admitted into local hospitals.

In another incident in Bheemavaram Kandriga of Marripadu mandal, four persons were injured when the autorickshaw, in which they were travelling was overturned. - Staff Reporter

MADANAPALLE: Handloom weavers belonging to Neerugattivaripalle near Madanapalle staged a dharna in front of the Sub-Collector's office on Wednesday demanding lowering of silk thread price. - Correspondent

Medical employees take out rally

KURNOOL: Medical employees led by INTUC took out a rally here on Thursday to protest against proposed privatisation of the medical services in the State.

The workers came in a procession from Raj Vihar to Collectorate and staged a demonstration. INTUC leaders Y.V. Ramana and others addressed the protesters.

They termed the privatisation proposal as a dangerous move which would badly hit the poorer sections. The politically influential people would take part in the bidding and fail to deliver the health services.

They urged the government to regularise the services of the temporary workers and fill the vacant posts. - Staff Reporter

Workshop on mango value chain

CHITTOOR: A two-day workshop on mango value chain was organised by the Federation of Farmers Association in collaboration with the Netherlands agriculture and fruits progressive export development authorities and the Department of Horticulture, here on Thursday.

Narrow escape for bus passengers

Nellore: Passengers of an RTC bus had a miraculous escape on Wednesday, when the bus skidded at Medaramettapalem area of Kondapuram mandal.

The incident occurred when the driver tried to avoid a buffalo.

Some of the passengers jumped out of the windows and around ten sustained minor injuries. - Staff Reporter

Investment nod for Sriramsagar project

HYDERABAD: The Sriramsagar Flood-Flow Canal project secured investment clearance from Government of India on Thursday.

Announcing this here, Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah said it would now be easier for the Government to get funds for the project under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme. - Special Correspondent

ADILABAD: Herakurma Ganapati alias Prasad, 38, a Gond tribal from Balhanpur in Utnoor mandal, who was shot at by naxalites on Wednesday night branding him police informer, died while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

Two students killed in road accident

Sangareddy: Two final year students of Banjara Hills-based M.J. College of Engineering died when the motorcycle their were driving was hit by a van near Gajwel on Rajiv Rahadari on Thursday. Vishnu of Karimnagar and Shiva of Siddipet died on the spot. Satish of Kodad and Bharat of Hyderabad, who were following them on another motorcycle, suffered injuries. - Staff Reporter

Fake currency racket busted

Nellore: The Kovur police busted a gang allegedly engaged in exchange of fake currency notes and sale of gold at cheap price.

The gang allegedly used to convince potential customers about the deal. When the party is ready with the agreed money, henchmen of the gang, posing as police, used to scare it away and pocket the entire sum. - Staff Reporter

State award for Helen Keller school

KADAPA: Helen Keller High School for the Deaf and Rehabilitation Centre has been adjudged best institution for serving disabled persons for 2003-04 by the State Government. Minister for Education and Disabled Welfare N. Rajyalakshmi gave away the State award to director of the school P. Jailed for killing wife

ELURU: Fifth Additional Judge (Fast Track court) I. Ramesh on Thursday sentenced a schoolteacher Konatala Rayudu to undergo 10 years imprisonment for killing his wife Balatripura Sundari.

According to the prosecution, Ramesh subjected his wife to harassment for more dowry and killed her in the year 2000 in Polavaram. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Adilabad emerged as the coldest place on Thursday, recording a night temperature of 7 degree Celsius, the State's lowest during the season so far. Heritage Foods denies charge

HYDERABAD: Heritage Foods (India) Limited has denied that three persons of Kashipentla village in Chandragiri mandal of Chittoor district died in the last few days on account of contamination of water due to release of chemicals and effluents from its local plant.

Reacting to reports in this regard, it said while a woman died of old age, a four-year-old girl passed away due to acute respiratory infection and one of its employees died due to heart disease. The causes of their death were certified by medical authorities, it said. - Special Correspondent
