Back I-T raids on hospitals, doctors in Chennai, Kumbakonam

THE Income-Tax Department has cracked down on some of the hospitals and doctors in Chennai and Kumbakonan, in an operation codenamed Operation Crush.

Mr Santhosh Datta, Director-General, Income-Tax Investigation and Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax, told presspersons that the tax evasion would be over Rs 10 crore though reports were still coming in. The department has raided eight hospitals of which six are in Chennai and two in Kumbakonan. Raids were also conducted on 14 doctors — orthopaedics, gynaecologists, cardiologists, paediatricians, dentists and ophthalmologists.

The raids were conducted in about 30 locations.
