`Networked sensor devices can warn of disasters'

It may be used for traffic control and urban planning, says Mayor

Bangalore: Mayor Mumtaz Begum on Thursday inaugurated the third `International Conference on Intelligent Sensing and Information Processing,' organised by Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers, Defence and Research Development Organisation and University of Melbourne.

Networked sensor devices can help cities such as Bangalore get adequate warning of natural disasters such as the heavy rainfall in October, pinpoint the worst-affected areas and rush help on time, she said. As the technology becomes more easily available, it may become possible to use it for traffic control and urban planning, she said.

Director of Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) P. Balaram said research relating to intelligent sensors and their networking is already under way at the IISc. and a centre dedicated to the field may be set up.

Collaboration

Research in the subject will continue with collaboration from overseas institutions and Government agencies, he said.

M. Palaniswamy of Melbourne University explained the scope of the conference, which is focussed on a fast developing and futuristic technology.

B.N. Thyagarja and M. Chowdegowda of the Institution of Engineers (India) Karnataka Chapter addressed the inaugural session.

The three-day conference will conclude on Saturday.
