Muslims need good schools Sir, Controversial schemes are often offered with an eye on the Muslim vote. Muslims need a good educational system at the primary and high school level. When Urdu schools are in a poor state, why does Minister for Minorities Welfare Jabbar Khan Honnali speak about Muslim University? What Muslims need is a good human resource development and training centre. Mumtaz Ali Khan, Bangalore.
Accident zone Sir, It is difficult to drive on the road between BEL Circle and Gangamma Circle. It is risky to turn towards Ramachandrapura, before Gangamma Circle, as this stretch of the road has been eroded. It has become an accident zone, particularly at night. Will the authorities concerned look into this problem? S. Raja Reddy, Bangalore.
Blame engineers Sir, This refers to the report "Urban Planners have overlooked violations" in The Hindu of December 17. The enforcement function with regard to town planning now lies with the Engineering Departments in Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and not with the Town Planning Department. For Bangalore planning area of 1,279 sq km, there are only 10 qualified planners in the BDA and the BMP whereas in Chennai, for almost the same planning area, there are 60 qualified planners. Planners in BMP and the BDA are busy preparing schemes, approving building plans, development plans and layout plans.Violations are rampant at the construction level. They occur because of lack of supervision by the engineers concerned. S.C. Kari Gowda, Institute of Town Planners, Bangalore.
