Bangalore: Traffic hold-ups which are the order of the day on the highway to Mysore beyond the City Market-Mysore Road flyover are expected to disappear by mid-2007.

The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has planned to begin work on a grade separator, along with a suspension bridge, at Kengeri to reduce traffic congestion on the busy State highway. The Rs. 15-crore project will come up close to the junction of the highway with the Outer Ring Road.

According to KRDCL officials, tenders have been called for the work and they will be finalised in January. Work may begin from February 2006 and be completed by May-June 2007. The agency to implement the project will also be selected by February.

Grade separator

The grade separator will be similar in design to the Airport Road flyover with more ramps; there will be free flow of traffic with no traffic signals to stop at. The suspension bridge is likely to be designed like the bridge near Krishnarajapuram Railway Station. The grade separator will have four ramps, connecting the Outer Ring Road to the Highway in both directions.

Work is to be taken up in phases, probably using pre-cast components. There will be no hindrance to traffic on the highway to Mysore while work is going on. The main structure will be built in parts with only some portions of the existing highway barricaded for limited period.

Traffic has increased at the intersection with Outer Ring Road and near the Rajarajeswari Nagar arch because of several new residential complexes.

Residential layouts

Behind the university several new residential layouts have been developed in recent years. All of them use the Mysore highway either to go towards the city or towards layouts and commercial establishments along the Outer Ring Road. The highway is also used by a large number of heavy vehicles. For all of them, the grade separator and bridge is likely to be a boon.
