Adjudged leading engineer

KADAPA: N. Kumaraswamy, Professor of Civil Engineering in KSRM College of Engineering in Kadapa, was adjudged a leading engineer by International Biographical Centre at Cambridge in the UK. Dr. Kumaraswamy had secured the Living Science Award last year for his research contributions on promoting ecological balance, environmental degradation due to Nano technology, improving ecological sanitation, preservation of natural and human resources, according to a statement. TIRUMALA: An elephant belonging to the Tirumala temple on Monday reportedly died due to diarrhoea. The 18-year-old jumbo named Ganesh was inducted into the temple services a couple of years back. Staff Reporter

Two held for extortion

ELURU: The police on Monday arrested two self-styled Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths in Bhimadole on the charge of extortion. According to the DSP, the accused Pothunuru Nageswara Rao of Pothunuru in Denduluru mandal and Kadiyam Veeravenkata Satyanarayana of Fathebad from the city allegedly threatened the Bhimadole MRO over his mobile to `trap' him on `graft charges' if he failed to pay them Rs. 30,000. The MRO was asked to come to the Powerpet railway station in the city and meet their demand. Smelling a rat, the MRO alerted the local police, leading to the nabbing of the pseudo sleuths.

No change in B.com syllabus

HYDERABAD: The Osmania University has clarified that there will not be any change in the syllabus and model question paper of B.Com course during the current academic year. A release said that the decision not to change the syllabus for now was taken in view of representations from students. The revised syllabus and model question paper would come into effect from the next academic year 2006-07. Staff Reporter

Salary raised

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Market Committee Security Guards' Union has thanked Marketing Minister B. Satyanarayana for issuing orders raising the salary of security guards from Rs. 1,800 to Rs. 2,386. Special Correspondent

APSRTC supervisors to remain neutral

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Class II Supervisors' Welfare Association has decided not to vote for any trade union in the verification elections to be held in the corporation on December 29.

The decision was taken by the association's executive which met here on December 18. Correspondent

Language celebrations

CHITTOOR: Language celebrations under the name Telugu Vikasam would be held here at the Z.P. meeting hall on December 29 in order to strengthen Telugu as the official language as per instructions of the State official language committee, district Collector S.S. Rawath on Monday.

Arrangements at temple for New Year

CHITTOOR: The Kanipaka Varasiddi Vinayakaswamy temple coordination committee meeting chaired by local MLA Galla Arunakumari on Monday discussed about the arrangements to be made for people visiting the temple on January 1.

The MLA directed officials to ensure proper facilities in the temple and its surroundings for the pilgrims to have easy darshan. Joint Commissioner and temple executive officer Kesavulu said two lakh people were expected to visit the temple on New Year day. - Correspondent

Lorry cleaner killed

Nellore: A lorry cleaner U. Saravanan (25) was killed after being sandwiched between two lorries on the National Highway near Ogili, on Monday.

According to information, the accident occurred when a lorry rammed into another, resulting in the tragedy. The Ogili police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Vysya Bank staff protest

KURNOOL: Employees of ING Vysya Bank staged a demonstration at the bank here on Monday to protest against the `anti-worker policies' of the bank.

The leaders accused the management of recruiting contract workers and giving them preference in assigning work.

Also, the employees were denied statutory benefits like bonus and jobs for kin of employees who died in service.

They alleged that in the name of discipline employees were being harassed. - Staff Reporter
