Rationalise services to improve efficiency, BMTC told

`High-frequency services between nodal centres need of the hour'

Bangalore: It is necessary to look into the possibility of rationalising routes and services to improve the efficiency of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Rajluxmi Vaish Murthy and T.V. Ramanayya of the Indian Institute of Management said here on Tuesday.

They were presenting a paper on "Rationalising the routing of BMTC bus services — a simulation model" at an international conference on "Operations research applications in infrastructure development".

They said a simulation model has been developed to understand the impact of alternative methods of routing on service and operational efficiencies.

The focus of the operations today is on point-to-point service, where frequency of service is low and turnaround times are high. This has resulted in a long waiting time for commuters.

As resources are not being used optimally, the possibility of introducing high-frequency services between nodal centres in different areas should be studied.
