Scientist's family shell-shocked

GLOOM AT HOME: Relatives of Prof. M.C. Puri, who was killed by intruders on the IISc campus in Bangalore, at his residence in New Delhi on Wedneday.
NEW DELHI: Saurabh Puri, son of the retired IIT-Delhi professor, M.C. Puri, who was killed in an attack at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, said the family had come to know of his death by watching the news on television.
Mr. Saurabh Puri, who lives in South Delhi and is a business executive, said the family was "completely shocked by the events." Many of Professor Puri's family and friends reached Mr. Saurabh Puri's residence when they heard the news.
The 64-year-old professor is also survived by his wife, Raksha Puri, who retired from the Department of Hindi in Kamla Nehru College, and daughter Shelly, a software engineer.
Professor Puri had served in the Department of Mathematics of IIT Delhi for over two decades and retired in August 2004. A specialist in Operations Research he had contributed to several journals and books. Now Professor Emeritus, he had gone to Bangalore to attend an international seminar on the subject.
The Registrar of IIT Delhi, Rajinder Singh, said the professor had won several awards.
