A calendar of simplicity

It contains rare photographs from Gandhiji's life

RUSTIC CHARM: A glimpse of Gandhiji's life

Bangalore: You cannot buy this unusual calendar. You may be gifted one, if you are lucky. Bangalore University is printing just 1,000 copies of this calendar being brought out by its Centre for Gandhian Studies for the third year.

Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa said: "When we started discussing the theme for this year, we were attracted by Albert Einstein's quote that "generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this, in flesh and blood, ever walked upon this earth."

This made the academicians thinks of what the Mahatma liked the most — simplicity. And it became the year's theme.

The calendar opens with Gandhiji's remark: "Literacy is not the end of education, not even its beginning."

"There is more to knowledge than learning from books and the Mahatma understood this," Dr. Thimmappa said. Incidentally, that quote of Gandhiji is also close to the university's motto.

The calendar contains some rare photographs from Gandhiji's life related to each month, accompanied by an appropriate quote. The picture for July 2006 shows Gandhiji at Sabarmathi ashram with a `mud pack' wrapped in a khadi towel over his head.

And the quote for the month is "unless all the discoveries that you make have the welfare of the poor as the end in view, all your workshops will be really not better than Satan's workshops."
