New Year honour

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Public Opinion has conferred its "Man of the Year-2005" award on veteran administrator-musicologist-astro-scientist N. P. Seshadri "for his pioneering services for the promotion of traditional culture and for serving many public causes for over five decades".

Dr. Seshadri, who will turn 77 on January 2, is the founder and now Chairman of the National Cultural Organisation inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru way back on October 16, 1950. as mediators and them for working with the Mediation Cell affected their regular work, Mr. Khosla complained.

Three arrested

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly involved in stealing telephone cables have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused -- Mohammad Mohid, Mohammad Mazhar and Mohammad Naushad -- were arrested near a powerhouse at ITO on Friday night. The police recovered a country-made revolver and knives from them.

The police said the gang was also involved in a robbery at Mukherjee Nagar in North-West Delhi a fortnight ago. They had gone to steal the cables of a private telecom company in Nirankari Colony. A security guard saw them and offered resistance. However, the accused tied him up and escaped with the cables.

Earlier this year, the gang had also killed a security guard at Anand Vihar in East Delhi when he tried to stop them from stealing cpables.

Mazhar and Naushad were members of the gang led by Charsi, the police said.

Dacoity plan foiled

NEW DELHI: Five persons, who were allegedly planning to commit a dacoity, have been arrested by North-East Delhi police. The police have recovered a country-made revolver and two knives from the accused. Acting on a tip-off, the Operations Cell of the North-East Delhi police laid a trap at Shahdara on Friday evening. The suspects appeared on the scene around 7 p.m. when they were arrested. Those arrested have been identified as Asif, Tayyab, Mohan Lal, Jitender Mohan and Ajay. The police said the accused were planning to commit dacoity in a house at West Jyoti Nagar in Shahdara. Mohan Lal was the driver who would ferry the accused in a Toyota Qualis, which was owned by a tour and travel agency.
