Double for Ayyappan

KOCHI: Former junior international Ayyappan Krishnan and Greeshma Balakrishnan won the men's and women's singles titles in the Peak Telecom Trophy South India inter-engineering college badminton tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Sunday.

College of Engineering (Thiruvananthapuram, 32) points won the team title while Cusat (Kochi, 17) finished runner-up in the two-day event organised by the Engineers Club, Kochi.

A.S. Suresh Babu, MD of Kinfra, and John Eipe of Peak Telecom, London, gave away the prizes.

Men: Singles: Ayyappan Krishnan (CET, Tvm) bt Arjun Prasad (Cusat, Kochi) 15-12, 15-6. Doubles: Ayyappan Krishnan/Tariq Mohammed (CET, Tvm) bt Arvind Shankar/Tony Mathew (CET, Tvm) 15-8, 15-13.

Women: Singles: Greeshma Balakrishnan (Cusat) bt Raiza Hanna David (Satyabhama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai) 11-2, 11-5.

Inter-alumni events: Men's singles: John of Matha (REC, Koz) bt George Varghese (CET, Tvm) 21-9. Doubles: John of Matha/Jacob John bt George Varghese/Tony John 15-8, 6-15, 15-7.

Veteran men's doubles: Jayan/Varghese Joseph bt E.V.R.Nair/Michael 21-0. — Principal Correspondent
