Constables held on extortion charge

Nellore: The town police nabbed two constables of Balaji Nagar police station of Nellore town, on Sunday, while they were allegedly extorting money from lorry drivers on the bypass road, near Ayyappa temple, on the outskirts of the town. The constables were kept in the nearby police station. The police declined to provide the names of the accused and under `humanitarian' grounds. — Staff Reporter

Constable ends life

ANANTAPUR: A police constable of the Gorantla police station, Mohd. Rafiq (35), allegedly committed suicide at Hindupur, on Saturday night by consuming liquor mixed with a pesticide. According to the police, he had some family problems. — Staff Reporter

Teachers protest for service rules

KADAPA: Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation members staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Saturday demanding framing of service rules, transfers, granting of promotions and filling of thousands of vacant posts. - Staff Reporter

Hyderabad: The Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases, Nellore, convicted K. Gopal Reddy, formerly Village Administrative Officer, Mittatmakur village and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for six months and pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 for accepting bribe of Rs. 1,000 from a complainant . In another case, Special Judge, SPE and ACB cases, Visakhapatnam, convicted K. Papa Rao, warden, Government B.C. Boys Hostel, Islampeta, for misappropriating Rs. 67,368 on forged bills by tampering with the records. - Staff Reporter

Strike on quota continues

Nellore: The relay hunger strikes by Muslims of Nellore town demanding reservations entered the 8th day on Sunday, with doctors from the community participating in the agitation. Speakers pointed out that the Muslims remained backward in education sector due and so were not able to secure seats in professional courses. - Staff Reporter

Election for WUA

Nellore: The Congress Party has established its supremacy in the elections for Water Users'Associations (WUA) in the district on Saturday, which was more or less peaceful. Out of 76 WUAs which was scheduled to go for polls in the last phase, 15 associations secured court stays and elections were held for 61 societies. - Staff Reporter

Close call for Venkaiah Naidu

GUNTUR: The car in which former president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) M.Venkaiah Naidu was travelling, met with an accident on Sunday when another car hit it from behind near Yedlapadu village in Guntur district. Mr. Naidu did not suffer any injuries and was safe.

He was travelling on the national highway number five from Rajahmundry to Nellore. - Staff Reporter

Four fake Maoists held

TIRUPATI : The Tirupati police claimed to have arrested four fake Maoists who they said were allegedly collecting funds from engineers working in various Government departments like Rural Water Supply and Panchayat Raj.

According to the police, the miscreants posing themselves as Maoists were extorting money in Nellore and Tirupati town. The police picked them up on Saturday. - Special Correspondent

Award for SHG stalls

HYDERABAD : The Department of Rural Development has bagged the best-designed pavilion award at the 93rd Indian Science Congress held in Hyderabad from January 3 to 7.

Members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from Nalgonda, Karimnagar, West Godavari, Medak, Mahabubnagar and Adilabad districts sold products like handlooms, leather products, crochet lace, embroidery sarees and silk sarees.

Dacoit gang member nabbed

ONGOLE : The police nabbed an inter-district dacoit gang leader Munga Sudha of Sturtupuram, and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs. 1.8 lakh allegedly stolen by him in different offences in the town.

Superintendent of Police N. Balasubramanyam told newspersons here on Sunday that Munga Sudhakar led a dacoit gang which had committed five offences in Ongole, two in Tirupati and one in Vizianagaram.

Efforts are being made to nab the other members of the gang. - Special Correspondent

Survey on manuscripts

Srikakulam: As part of National Manuscript Mission-2003, a survey on manuscripts and palm leave scripts will be conducted in Srikakulam district from February 20 to 25.

The survey will include manuscripts, creative writings, documents and others connected with important activities in the villages before 1935.

Only details of such manuscripts and documents would be obtained and they would not be taken over by authorities, according to a press release by the Collectorate. - Special Correspondent

Support to irrigation projects assured

HYDERABAD : Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia has offered Centre's full support to the irrigation projects taken up by the State Government.

He gave the assurance to a delegation led by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah and officials.

Dr. Reddy submitted a memorandum to Mr. Ahluwalia seeking assistance from the Centre directly, according to a press release.

Action against DSP sought

HYDERABAD : The CPI State Council has demanded stringent action against Narsaraopet DSP Pruthvinarayan for making objectionable remarks while addressing a meeting of Kapus on December 31.

In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, CPI State secretary K. Narayana took strong objection to the participation of the police officer in the meeting.

He wanted the Government to remove the DSP from the post, as his continuance "would further bring down the Government's prestige". - Special Correspondent
