English from first standard

Sir, — Last year there was a heated debate regarding the introduction of English from first standard in government schools. Several Dalit and minority organisations lent their support to the demand that English be taught from first standard. Recently, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R. Ramalinga Reddy said the issue was before the Cabinet. While English may be taught from first standard, Kannada should be made a compulsorily subject.

Quota in minority institutions

Sir, — The Government's decision to introduce reservation in unaided minority educational institutions is bound to create confusion in the admission process next year. There have been several High Court and Supreme Court judgments regarding the right of minorities to establish and administer their own educational institutions. Students who get selected for admission to these institutions through the Common Entrance Test will have to wait with anxiety. It will be better for the Government to accept the ground realities and reach an amicable understanding with minority institutions in this regard.

Improve infrastructure

Sir, — The roads leading to places of tourist interest such as Halebid, Belur, Kollur, Kukke Subrahmanya and Shravanabelagola are in poor condition. The roads have potholes and deep pits. The State Government, which boasts of promoting tourism, should take steps to improve infrastructure in places of tourist interest.

Collection of fine

Sir, — The Byatarayanapura City Municipal Corporation (CMC) authorities are collecting a fine of Rs. 100 with respect to payment of deposit for Cauvery water supply, though the water supply connection is yet to be introduced in areas such as Ramachandrapura. The authorities have not told the residents how much money will be collected and till what date the amount can be paid. The authorities concerned should make sure the CMC authorities do not collect fines before informing the residents about how much they have to pay. They should display a notice at the CMC ward office at Ramachandrapura in this regard.
