Back Food security

This is with reference to the editorial, "Food for thought," (Business Line, January 9). The argument for focussing social spending on the "most needy" will make sense only if all those who are needy have been recognised as such.

Those who most need the PDS system are those who spend a substantial portion of their income on food, and they form a much larger group than just the BPL category. It is time to press the government to redefine this category to include all those who are perpetually or even seasonally food-insecure.
