Kolkata , Jan. 22

IN A bid to accelerate the growth of the garment, hosiery and apparel industry in the State, the Bengal Industrial Development Corporation has initiated a move to set up a garment park in the city in an area of over 8.78 acres.

The project will have a total of five 5-storied standard design factory buildings, for setting up manufacturing units, and 3-storied common facilities buildings for setting up common service and logistic support units for manufacturers and a working women's hostel.

The park will be built in two phases to be completed by September 2007. There will be space for 70 manufacturing units of various sizes in phase-1; after phase-II, the park will accommodate about 100 units. The two phases together will generate employment for 8,000 workers.

The common facilities buildings will have space for setting up bank branches, training institutes, courier companies, restaurants, retail outlets, a working women hostel and other allied support services.

The bookings for the modules in the park are open from January 20 to February 17, 2006.

According to the State's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Nirupan Sen, the response from garment manufacturers has been encouraging.
