Back Indo-German tech institute labs at Vizag

THE Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) in the industrial estate here will have a full-fledged production centre after completion and the total outlay for the project is Rs 25 crore, according to Mr D.J. Hahn, the programme director, German Agency for Technical Co-operation, New Delhi.

He was speaking here on Saturday evening after inaugurating two laboratories of the institute. He said the institute - set up jointly by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the German Government and the local Gayatri Vidya Parishad - would strive to upgrade the skills of engineering, polytechnic students in the State.

The focus would be on technology transfer in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies, maintenance of machines, industrial electronics and environmental engineering.

"We will have a full-scale production centre attached to the institute where precision jobs can be undertaken for outside organisations. Two of the labs in the areas of CAD/CAM (computer-aided designing and manufacturing) are already functioning and two more will be ready by March," he said.

He said the first set of courses would be launched by the end of the month. "Of the total project outlay, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has provided five acres of land and Rs 4 crore for buildings, the German Government Rs 16 crore and the Gayatri Vidya Parishad Rs 2.5 crore for recurring costs and managerial inputs," he added.

Dr A. Pfeil, the counsellor and head, economic co-operation and development, German embassy, New Delhi, Mr W. Elberfeld, Federal German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development, Prof. P.S. Rao, Director, Mr G. Kumaraswamy Reddy, president of the society for the institute, also spoke.
