BIDAR: The open house session of the 72nd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, which adopted 14 resolutions, has demanded that the Government evolve a comprehensive cultural policy for the development of Kannada.

The session held here on Sunday paid rich tributes to 98 eminent Kannadigas, some of them being noted filmmaker G.V. Iyer, poet K.S. Narasimha Swamy, the former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hedge, politician and educationist M.R. Tanga, the former Chief Justice of the erstwhile Mysore High Court Nittor Srinivasa Rao and scientist Raja Ramanna, who died after the conclusion of the 71st sammelan held at Moodbidri. Presiding over the session, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Chandrashekhar Patil said that the Government can no longer afford to ignore Kannada and its related issues as it has realised the vitality of the increasing Kannada consciousness.
Resolutions
Some of the major resolutions adopted are: The Government should initiate measures to get the stay given by the Karnataka High Court pertaining to the medium of instruction vacated; take steps to implement the long pending Sarojini Mahishi Commission's report on providing employment to Kannadigas on priority in the industrial sector; implementation of the D.M. Nanjundappa Commissions report on setting right the regional imbalances with a focus on Hyderabad Karnataka, and orders to convert the English software being used in the State administration into independent Kannada software.
Classical tag
A separate resolution demanded that the Union Government accord classical status to Kannada.
