BSF orders probe into Kamakhya incident

Conflicting versions by priests and BSF men

Guwahati: The Border Security Force (BSF) has ordered a departmental inquiry, to be headed by a senior Commandant, into the incident at the Kamakhya temple involving jawans of the 128 battalion.

Police detained 18 BSF personnel on Sunday for alleged disorderly conduct but they were released later. The temple authorities alleged that the BSF men had beaten up priests, devotees and shop owners on the premises when asked to come in the queue.

The BSF, however, said a scuffle took place when the jawans standing in the queue objected to the pandas allowing "some influential persons" to enter the temple out of turn. Some pandas assaulted the jawans, seriously injuring two of them. The BSF lodged an FIR with the police on the incident.

The DIG, BSF, visited the temple on Monday and met head priest Kamal Sharma and chief administrator Raju Prasad Sarma.
