Annamalai University bags title

GANDHIGRAM: Annamalai University lifted the KSS memorial trophy defeating Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti 67-62 in the last match of the semifinal round robin league of the State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament conducted by Gandhigram Rural Institute here on Sunday.

Annamalai University emerged winner with an all win record and SIT finished runner-up, losing only to Annamalai University. St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi bt Jamal Mohamed College also from Tiruchi 76-69 for its only win to finish third.

The results: (league): Annamalai University 67 (Rajavel 22, Dinesh 17, Mohd. Ali Azarudeen 16) bt SIT, Kariapatti 62 (Antony 15, Dominic Joe 24, Devadas 11); St. Joseph's 76 (T. Prem Kumar 22, S. Babu CA in quarterfinals

Babu Cricket Academy entered the quarterfinals of the Richards Trophy district-level cricket tournament defeating Spark Cricket Club by 23 runs in Madurai on Sunday.

The scores: Babu Cricket Academy 136 for seven in 20 overs (Samson 52) bt Spark CC 113 for seven in 20 overs; DDK CC 151for seven in 20 overs (Mari 65) bt Phoenix CC 52 in 20 overs (Ramesh four for 15); Modern Golden Star CC 126 for eight in 20 overs (Rajesh four for 18) bt Majestic CC 54 in 13.5 overs (Nagaraj four for 15).

Suresh Raja sparkles

Two spells of five wickets each by N. Suresh Raja of Sputnik Cricket Club in two different matches was the highlight of the Indian Bank-Vellore District Cricket Association league matches held in Vellore on Saturday and Sunday.

The scores: Second division: Sputnik CC 232 in 25 overs (T. Dhayalan 64, Manavalan 40, Arokiadass four for 23) bt United `B' CC 125 (N. Suresh Raja five for 34); Venus CC 150 for six in 25 overs bt Munroes CC 121 (S. Karthick four for 22); Sputnik CC 135 for five in 25 overs bt Arcot CC 89 (N. Suresh Raja five for 30).

High Court FC posts win

High Court Football Club posted a comfortable 3-0 win over Muthu Memorial Football Club in the Madurai District Football Association `C' division league in Madurai on Sunday.

The results: High Court FC 3 (Sethu Mathavan, Paramadas, Ghouse Basha) bt Muthu Memorial FC 0; Latha Mathavan Polytechnic College 2 (Suresh 2) bt Vaigai FC 1 (Mani); Lechatelier FC 1 (Sundara Pandi) drew with Golden Star FC 1 (Kalai Sahayanathan).

CACRI wins

Coimbatore Agricultural College and Research Institute won the men's hockey title defeating host Madurai Agricultural College and Research Institute 2-0 in the final of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University inter-collegiate games meet in Madurai on Sunday.

Dr. R. Thirumalaisamy, vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, gave away the prizes.

Muthu hits century

M.S. Muthu Vivekanandan's 125 helped APCC defeat Majestic CC by 90 runs in the Indian Bank-Dindigul DCA first division league in Dindigul.
